Rowing

Everything you need to know about rowing at the University of Manchester.

About

We currently offer rowing through our sport club programme. Our University of Manchester Boat Club works hard to provide opportunities for players both new to the sport and within our BUCS programme to support those who want to perform in high level university competition. Whilst we don’t currently offer rowing through our Sporticipate or our Sport League programmes, we are constantly reviewing how we can get more students involved in sport.

All the information you need to know about rowing should be here but if you do have any further questions, we would love to hear from you.

Boat Club

Manchester University Boat Club (MUBC) is one of the largest sport clubs in the University, with around 200 members. Founded in 1932, the Boat Club has since grown into a thriving club for both novices and seniors. Committed members will be supported in their training to compete in high level events including, Head of the River, Henley Women’s Regatta, Henley Royal Regatta and many go on to represent their country at a higher level; with Hugh Gallie winning gold at the Rowing Junior Championships or Peter Zelinka winning silver at European Rowing Under-23 Championships.

The Boat House is a 20-minute cycle from the Fallowfield student campus, with an ever growing fleet of boats of all classes, enough for all four squads to train simultaneously. MUBC train on the 12km stretch of the Bridgewater Canal, a calm, undisturbed stretch of water accessible all year round.

In recent years MUBC has seen success on both a regional and national stage, with expansions taking place in the club to build on this success and see our club improve further. At MUBC we have a culture that rewards commitment and willingness to learn. We always aim to bring out the very best in our athletes and to see them succeed.

How to Join

How to Join
If you would like to Join MUBC, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us. The easiest way is to head to the Join page of our website and fill in the form (https://mubc.org.uk/join/) and one of our squad captains will get back to you with more information.

Club Philosophy

The club welcomes anyone willing to commit to our exceptionally rewarding sport. We welcome and cater for all: from complete beginners to elite international athletes.

Team work, dedication and inclusivity are core values of the club and enable both individual and club success. We are a group of athletes whom are wholly dedicated to our sport. Alongside this we continue to maintain enjoyable environment, with all of the squads often training together to really develop our team spirit.

At the Senior level, our athletes will train training most days, with the aim to compete alongside some of the other top universities. We also have a great learn to row programme for anyone looking to learn a new sport, with many of our Seniors having progressed from our Novice squads.

As well as training hard and winning races, we are also an incredibly social club. As one of the biggest AU clubs, we are well represented at AU nights, but we also hold other social events throughout the year, including our famous Annual Ball.

It is often said that rowers aren’t just your team mates, but become your family. We maintain strong links with our alumni – many of whom have gone on to row for GB at the Olympics and Rowing World Cup events. Even after you graduate you’ll always be part of MUBC.

Teams

Rowing

Depending on your previous experience and your personal preferences there are three different ways to get involved with the club as a rower: Senior squads, Novice squads and Recreational squad.

The Senior squad is the main performance-based pathway for those who are already competent rowers. For those who do not yet know how to row, but still want to compete for the club is the Novice squad. Finally, there is also the Recreational squad for those who would like to participate in the sport without the intense training and commitment required of the Senior and Novice Squads. For those with previous rowing experience, the Senior squads at MUBC are an excellent place to develop as an oarsman/oarswoman, surrounded by performance-minded individuals.

> Senior Men’s Squad
> Senior Women’s Squad
> Novice Men’s Squad
> Novice Women’s Squad
> Recreational Squad

Coxing

Whether you’ve had experience as a coxswain, a rower, or are brand new to the sport, with MUBC you will learn how to motivate and control a crew, as well as coach and incentivise the athletes under your command. Coxes are integral and well respected members of our club and are represented by their own Vice Captain.
