Mountaineering and Climbing

Everything you need to know about mountaineering and climbing at the University of Manchester.

About

We have a broad range of opportunities to get involved in mountaineering and climbing at The University of Manchester with everything from drop in sessions to high level university competition with our University of Manchester Mountaineering Club.

All the information you need to know about mountaineering and climbing should be here but if you do have any further questions, we would love to hear from you.

Sporticipate Sessions

Our recreational sport offer is entitled Sporticipate, and is the entry level programme for all students and staff at The University of Manchester.

All sessions, programmes and events are open to all abilities, specifically people who are new to the activity or complete beginners. All sessions provide equipment and the sessions are facilitated by the UoM Sport Workforce.

Sportcipate runs a full weekly drop in timetable, structured blocks of ‘Learn To’ coached sessions and regular large scale events. All are either free or at very low cost, which helps you stay fit and active during your time on campus.

Mountaineering Club

The club represents all mountaineers and climbers at the University of Manchester and we welcome new and experienced climbers alike. Our official weekly sessions, open to all, are bouldering at Rockover on Monday evenings, and roped climbing at Manchester Climbing Centre Wednesday afternoons. We’ll be offering opportunities throughout the year to learn the basics of different disciplines within climbing, including sport, trad and winter climbing.

We run club weekends throughout the year, visiting the Lake District, North Wales, Pembroke and Scotland. On top of this we have our annual week-long trip to Fontainebleau, France: the greatest bouldering location on the planet! We run other smaller trips throughout the year and on any dry weekend it’s almost guaranteed some of our members will be heading out to the Peak District. We also run an annual winter skills trip for those who want to be able to get out when the weather’s cold too. Additionally we have weekly socials in term time with a variety of themes, which are the perfect opportunity to meet new friends/climbing partners!

Club Philosophy

We aim to provide a friendly and supportive atmosphere where mountaineers of all levels of experience meet, share knowledge, and get the support they need to expand their skillset and improve their performance. The club has historically focused on trad climbing and, while this remains an important part of UK climbing culture and a significant part of the club, we recognise the changing landscape of climbing & mountaineering and welcome and offer opportunities for all mountaineers from sport, trad and bouldering.

Club Training Times and Venues

Teams

Our main comps team of 5 men and 5 women represent the club in the BUCS, NUBS, and Christie competitions. We are on the lookout for talented new climbers to join the team for the 2019/20 academic year, so if you think you’ve got what it takes get in touch! Comp team members receive free top-quality coaching as well as free transport and entry to competitions.

This year we also aim to set up a formal development squad for club members wishing to progress their climbing to the next level.
