University Sport Scholars – December Update
Whilst much of the sporting world has come to halt through lockdown 2.0, a number of our university sport scholars and TASS athletes have continued their training and competitions. Our Armitage Sports Centre site was set up as an elite sport venue host to ensure our top athletes could continue to train through this period. These athletes have therefore received uninterrupted support from our expert strength and conditioning coaches and physiotherapy staff.

Great Britain Track cyclist, Sophie Capewell (BSc Mathematics), competed in the UEC European Track Championships in Plovdiv this month. Sophie competed in the Womens Sprint on day two of the event, reaching the quarterfinals, losing to Bronze medallist, Olena Starikova, of Ukraine. Sophie followed this up on day four in the Keirin event and was unlucky to miss out on a medal, finishing fourth in the final. The Great Britain Cycling Team finished the competition at the top of the medal table with six gold, three silver and two bronze medals
England and Manchester Thunder Netballer, Amy Carter (MBChB Medicine), travelled to New Zealand with the national team for a three-test series against the world champions. Amy played in two of the three tests against the Silver Ferns. In contrast to the New Zealand team, the majority of the English players had not played any competitive netball since March due to the pandemic, and take a lot of positives from the series despite losing 3-0.
After an outstanding return to racing in September, Aimee Pratt (BSc Anatomical Sciences) has been shortlisted by Athletics Weekly for the British Athlete of the Year.
