UoM Athletes competed at BUCS Nationals this past weekend in Sheffield

  From February 23th to February 25th, UoM Sport had student athletes competing across six sports at BUCS Nationals in Sheffield. On Friday the 23rd we saw Long Course Swimming and Para Swimming (Located at Ponds Forge), Indoor Athletics and Badminton (Both located at the EIS Sheffield), and Fencing (Located Canon Medical Arena) kick off the weekend of competition. Karate took place across the 24th and 25th in the Sports Hall at Ponds Forge. Saturday the 24th was the sole day of competition for Climbing (Located at Climbing Works).

Swimming and Para Swimming

At Ponds Forge, we saw some fantastic results from our para and non-para swimmers! Results from the Team are listed below:

• Sophie Shaw (Sport Scholar):
  •  5^th in the Female 100m Backstroke
  • 7^th in the Female 200m Backstroke
  • 4^th in the B final of the Female 50m Backstroke
• Grave Harvey (Sport Scholar):
  • 1st in Female 50m Freestyle (Classification – S6)
  • 1st in Female 100m Breastroke (Classification – S6)
  • 1st in Female 200m IM (Classification – S6)
• Amy West : 
  • 8^th in the Female 100m Freestyle
  • 10^th in the B final of the Female 200m Freestyle
• Ella Bainbridge:
  •  5^th in the B final of the Female 200m IM

• Abigail Parkinson:
  • 6^th in the B final of the Female 100m Freestyle

• Denisa-Elena Gogu:
  • 4^th in the B final of the Female 200m Breaststroke
  • 7^th in the B final of the Female 100m Breaststroke
• 8^th in the Female 4x100m Freestyle Relay
• 10^th in the Female 4x100m Medley Relay

• 5th in the B final of the 4x100m Mixed Medley Relay

Athletics

On the Indoor Athletics Track at EIS, we saw some standout performances from those within UoM Sport’s Athletics programme.

2nd Place Men’s Singles

Badminton

From Badminton, we had athletes competing across all specialties, Men’s Singles (MS), Women’s Singles (WS), Men’s Double’s (MD), Women’s Double’s (WD), and Mixed Doubles (XD). Results are as below:

Fencing

At the Canon Medical Arena, Sports Scholar Imogen Bulman competed in the Women’s Epee category on the 25th.

3rd Place Women’s Epee

Climbing

Across the city from the rest of the events, the Climbing events took place solely on the action-packed Saturday, where we had some great UoM reps competing in the evening. On Saturday, universities were allocated one of three session times where all of their athletes would compete, and UoM Climbers Toby Fung, Louis Nieuwoudt, and Douglas Spencer tackled the last session of the day. Competing against 280 athletes from institutions across the country, all three athletes placed within the top 85, with Douglas Spencer qualifying at an impressive 14th place, Louis Nieuwoudt finishing at 44th, and Toby Fung taking #82.

Karate

From 24th of February to 25th of February, UoM Karate Club sent a team of 12 peoples to compete in various categories. Kata categories were held in 24th while Kumite on 25th. This year, they managed to score an incredible 3 medals – 1 silver, 2 bronze.

Alex Scholes (Bronze, Men Senior Kumite -60kg) 

Petros Kotzanastassis (Bronze, Men Senior Kumite -67kg) 

With top 4 placing for the seniors’ categories, they are eligible to compete in European Games 2024. Congrats to them!
