Sports Scholar Spotlight: Daniel Akinradewo - Athletics Triple Jump

Spotlight: Daniel Akinradewo

Daniel Akinradewo, a distinguished UoM Sport Scholar in Environmental Science at The University of Manchester, has seamlessly woven his dedication to the Men’s Triple Jump with his academic study, demonstrating his exceptional abilities. His journey represents his adaptability, commitment, and enthusiasm.

Background

Growing up in Manchester as the youngest of three children, Akinradewo initially found his passion for sports through physical education classes and avidly watching football. His entry into athletics was marked by a pivotal moment at the national championships in 2020, igniting a passion for the competitive atmosphere that drove his desire to pursue the sport further.

Training

Transitioning from a football background to excel in the demanding Men’s Triple Jump showcased Akinradewo’s adaptability. His typical day revolves around a meticulous routine that spans morning core stability exercises and stretching, balanced with lectures, before dedicating evenings to the gym or track training sessions lasting around two hours.

Challenges

Despite facing challenges, such as narrowly missing selection for the European Junior Championships, Akinradewo channels setbacks into motivation, intensifying his training regimen to avoid reliving such disappointments. One of the highlights of his journey was his undefeated record at the under-17 level in 2021, showcasing his dedication and commitment despite his relative newcomer status in the realm of triple jump.

Balancing sport and study

The balancing act between athletic commitments and personal life is a challenge Akinradewo navigates by acknowledging the need for sacrifices in pursuit of success. His lifestyle prioritises sufficient sleep, adherence to structured meal plans and nutrition, and consistent stretching routines. Daniel says:

‘I like to have the same breakfast and the same snack bar pre-competition, one before my warmup and one in the call room before going out to the track. I also listen to the same track in my warm-up and use the same visualisation techniques. I feel continuity is important for me to feel calm amongst the chaos on comp day.’

Beyond sports, Akinradewo finds time to enjoy music, regularly playing three instruments, and basketball.

Future horizons

With aspirations set on Olympic standards, Akinradewo shares valuable advice for aspiring athletes, emphasising the transformative power of self-belief. He encourages stepping out of comfort zones, having confidence in personal abilities, and believing in the potential to achieve dreams through persistent hard work.

His approach to setbacks is grounded in the understanding that each obstacle is a stepping stone toward his ultimate goal. In the face of adversity, Akinradewo champions resilience, understanding that success in sports demands determination. His narrative, filled with challenges and victories, serves as an example of inspiration for upcoming generations. Akinradewo’s story encourages others to have faith in their abilities, persist in their endeavours, and relentlessly pursue their aspirations, both in academia and on the athletic field.
