This Girl Can 2019

1-8 December

Sports participation in the UK is suffering from a significant gender gap. Research carried out by Sport England reveals that by every measure, fewer women than men play sport regularly. Two million fewer 14- to 40-year-old women take part in sport when compared with men, despite the fact that 75% say they want to be more active. In 2015 Sport England started the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) “This Girl Can” campaign. As a result of the campaign in 2018, 1.6 million women have started exercising. Moreover, the number of women playing sport and being active is increasing faster than the number of men.

Between the 1 - 8 December 2019 UoM Sport have celebrated this national campaign for another year. The week involved more than 30 activities from women’s only Skiing to women’s only American football with nearly 300 University staff and students taking part in activity. Alongside sport there were a number of stalls across the University to showcase the week and huge engagement on social media. 26 of our Athletic Union clubs ran activities and/or social media campaigns increasing the profile of the cause and showing that for certain – these Manchester girls can!

As part of This Girl Can we celebrated those inspirational girls within the sports department, sharing photos and quotes from a number of nominees across UoM Sport social media accounts. The nominated staff and students, as well as the many others that are involved, are a great asset to the sports department as part of the sports workforce, recreational sport and representative sport for the University of Manchester. Sports Officer, Lizzie O’Connor “We are proud of all those girls who got involved with This Girl Can week, every little bit counts. You all helped to make the This Girl Can campaign a big success. There are a full range of activities for all abilities aimed at staff and students available at UoM Sport and we would love for as many girls to keep on getting involved.”

The This Girl Can campaign emphasised how, no matter your ability or busy schedule, there are activities to get involved in, whether this is through attending a sports class or just walking to work, it all counts. We hope this has inspired girls to try something new and to carry on getting involved now, and in the future.
