Sport Scholarships

The University of Manchester offer over 400 exciting academic degree programmes and understands that there are student athletes who aspire to represent their country in a sport but also want to study a degree that is not focussed on sport.

BRAND NEW TO 2016/17

The University has four scholarship/award packages available.

The aims of the Scholarship/Awards are to:

  • To nurture already idenitifed and verified sporting talent, in achieving a successful dual career, maximising their potential in academia alongside their chosen sport
  • Raise the profile and reputation of sport at The University of Manchester
  • Attract talented students to the University and optimise the University's performance in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) League

The varying levels are:

  • SPORT Scholarship (value £2,500 per athlete): 15 annual scholarships awarded to student athletes on a UK Sport or Sport England Talent pathway
  • Overseas Scholarship (value £2,000): 1 annual scholarship awarded to an individual (European Union or International student) competing at a Junior National level on a recognised pathway for their Country and Sport
  • Focus Sport Scholarship (value £3,250 per athlete): 3 annual scholarships awarded to an individual (UK/European Union or International Postgraduate or Undergraduate student) on a talent pathway in one of our 3 Focus Sports; Lacrosse, Netball and Squash
  • BUCS Ambassador Award (value £500): 10 Awards for individuals who have competed on a UK Sport or Sport England Talent pathway, are a great ambassador for their sport
    • Individuals must be able to demonstrate how they contribute to the Athletic Union Sports Club (or Students' Union Society if compete in BUCS) success in BUCS

Sport England Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS)

The external SPORT Manchester Scholarship is The Sport England Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) which is a unique government backed partnership between talented young athletes, educational institutions and national governing bodies of sport. The University of Manchester is the Sport England TASS Accredited Centre (TAC) based in the North of England, Manchester.

TAC Manchester currently caters for 15 athletes across 12 sports. Manchester has a core team who ensure high quality delivery of services to our valued and aspiring TASS athletes aiming to help support them to be the best they can be.

Applicant Guidance and Online Application Form Information

For the SPORT Manchester Scholarship and Overseas Scholarship.

Applications for SPORT Manchester Scholarships are accepted all year round with two panel assessments per year (July and December). The Overseas Scholarship is selected in the July assessment. Applications are accepted from prospective and current University of Manchester Undergraduate or Postgraduate students.

The Scholarship Application form is currently closed and will reopen in July after the outcome of the current panel has been published.

The form may take a while to fill in, so it is recommended that you type out your answers elsewhere and paste them into the form to avoid losing any information. A PDF copy of the form showing all of the questions is available here.

NB. The deadline for your application to be assessed at the December panel is 27th November 2017 (support will commence in January 2018)
Please note any applications submitted after the above deadline will be considered at the next panel assessment date in July 2018.

Essential Criteria

To apply for a scholarship, you must meet the following essential criteria:

  • A University of Manchester full-time/part-time undergraduate/postgraduate student OR a prospective student who has received a conditional/unconditional offer and is commencing study in that same year.
  • Competing at a minimum of Junior National level on a recognised player pathway for your sport (which must be a Talent-funded Sport England/UK Sport recognised sport, or equivalent for Overseas applications).
  • An ambassador for your sport with a commitment to supporting the development and performance of the relevant University Sports Club for your sport (in an agreed capacity)
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to striving for personal excellence which needs to be defined in this application.
  • Able to demonstrate Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound (SMART) sporting and educational goals which need to be defined in this application.
  • Focus Sport Only - You will automatically be considered for a Focus Sport scholarship if you are competing in one of the University's key focus sports; Squash, Netball or Lacrosse
  • Overseas Scholarship only - Be an athlete based outside of the United Kingdom (European Union or International Students may apply)

SPORT Manchester Scholarship - Package

The SPORT Manchester Scholarship package has been developed to meet the needs of students balancing studying an academic degree with achieving their aspirations to continue to move up their sporting pathway. The focus of the package is around support services that enable the athletes to manage their time effectively and utilise support services, like Strength and Conditioning, Physiotherapy and Lifestyle Support, to help them be their best.

All service providers aim to work in partnership with relevant National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and other service providers to complement the athlete support network as opposed to duplicating services.

The list below provides an overview of support provided to successful SPORT Manchester student athletes:

  • £1500 (Focus Sport Scholarship) or £750 (Overseas and Sport Scholarships) towards training or competition expenses
  • Annual gym pass for Armitage Sports Centre or Sugden
  • Athletic Union club membership
  • 1–2–1 sessions with our expert strength and conditioning coaching team (DNA Sports Performance)
  • Free physiotherapy from our full-time University / TASS Physiotherapist
  • Mentoring / Lifestyle
  • Free sports scholarship kit
  • Access to workshops
  • Promotion of your success
  • Opportunity to be an ambassador for your sport
