BUCS Awards 2023: Three UoM Sport Nominees Shortlisted for Prestigious University

In a year filled with exceptional achievements in university sport, the BUCS Awards have announced their shortlist for 2023, honouring the very best teams, individuals, and initiatives. With over 270 nominations received, the competition was fierce, making it an outstanding accomplishment to be included among the finalists. 

Among the standout nominees, three University of Manchester individuals and programmes have made it to the highly coveted shortlist. The nominees include:  

  • Sporticipate for Participation Programme of the Year;
  • Stephen Ashworth for Unsung Hero; and 
  • Sid Mahala for Student Volunteer of the Year.

 Participation Programme of the Year

Sporticipate, a participation programme that aims to engage and involves students in various sports activities, has made a significant impact on the university sports landscape. This initiative dedicated to encouraging student involvement and fostering a sense of community has earned them a well-deserved spot on the shortlist.

 

Unsung Hero

Stephen Ashworth, a true unsung hero, has been recognised for his remarkable contributions to university sport. His tireless efforts and behind-the-scenes work have had a profound impact on the success of a number of flagship sports programmes. His dedication and commitment have not gone unnoticed, earning him a place among the esteemed nominees.

 Chris Potter Student Volunteer of the Year

Sid Mahala’s outstanding commitment to volunteering has propelled him to the forefront of the university sports community. His selfless contributions and unwavering support have positively influenced the experiences of countless student-athletes. Mahala’s nomination for Student Volunteer of the Year reflects his exceptional dedication to serving others.

The Awards

The BUCS Awards ceremony, a highly anticipated event, is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 13 July 2023, at the University of Leeds. The ceremony promises to be a grand celebration of the remarkable achievements made by these exceptional individuals and programmes throughout the season. Attendees at the ceremony will have the opportunity to witness the recognition of outstanding sporting accomplishments and show their support for the nominees.

The BUCS Awards, known for their prestigious reputation, are set to bring together individuals and organisations from across the sports industry. Distinguished judges, including representatives from The FA, England Hockey, City Football Group, Wales Netball, SkySports, and many more, have been deeply impressed by the calibre of this year’s nominations. Making it to the shortlist itself is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of all those involved.
