Purple Wave

Last year we had nearly 3,000 University of Manchester staff, students and alumni entering our Purple Wave events. Make sure you get involved in one of the opportunities this year!

The Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run

The Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run is the largest 10K in the UK consisting of around 25,000 participants each year. For the past 4 years, the University has hosted its very own purple wave. On Sunday 24th May 2020, we will again be entering the countries biggest Higher Education team, so come and run, walk or jog with us and be part of the #purplewave

Discounted rates will be available for all students, staff and alumni who enter through us with prices to be confirmed in the near future.

Additionally we encourage as many of our entrants as possible to raise money for the University’s charitable causes. So, we will again be offering free Purple Wave registration for people who would like to fundraise for selected causes, by running the 10K or half marathon.

Discounted places are limited, so once these are sold out we will revert to the standard entry price.

To ensure you hear about the offers and don't miss out, express your interest here!

If you need more information about any aspect of the event please email us at purplewave@manchester.ac.uk.

The Manchester Universities 2.5K & 5K Run

Last year, we had 790 purple runners and walkers in the first ever Universities 2.5k & 5k event which either provided a first opportunity to get running or a great platform towards the 10k in May.

Due to the success, we will be hosting another 2.5k & 5k Run on Wednesday 11th March 2020. Express your interest here to keep up to date.

If you would like more information about any aspect of the event please email us at purplewave@manchester.ac.uk.

The Great Manchester Run is for everyone, whether you are a complete beginner or the next Mo Farah, we have a number of running groups to support all levels of ability throughout your 10K or half marathon journey.

To support the scale of the purple wave project we require a number of people to help us both before the events and on the days itself. Previous years we have had a number of different roles in communications, marketing, run leaders and event day logistics that require support, so if you want to get involved check out our Sports Volunteering Scheme, which has loads of other fantastic benefits.

UoM Wall of Sound

If you are not running but want to support, you can still be involved by coming down on the day and cheering our runners, walkers and joggers at our UoM Wall of Sound. Located on Bridgewater Way at the junction with Chester Road, our purple cheer-point is free and suitable for all ages. It is open from 8.30am-4.30pm and easily accessed from Cornbrook tram stop or you can walk 35 minutes from Renold Building heading for M16 9FG.

We have a great grassy picnic spot, our Fuse FM DJ's and a range of other exciting things planned, so come wearing purple and cheer on our participants!
