Purple Wave

Our Purple Wave aims to bring together thousands of University staff, students and alumni through one of our mass participation running, walking or jogging events. Make sure you get involved in one of the opportunities this year!

Purple Wave Announcement for GMR 10k & Half Marathon

The rescheduled Great Manchester Run that was due to take place on the 6th September has now been cancelled.

Anyone who has entered through the University will be offered a refund, details of the process and expected date of refund will be emailed to all participants. We will instead be prioritising our time to provide a Virtual Purple Wave on the event day, details of which can be found below.

We would like to apologise for the delay to our intended updates during this period and any inconvenience this will have caused.

Join the first ever Virtual Purple Wave!

The University of Manchester invites all students, staff, alumni, offer holders and members of our wider community to join the first ever Virtual Purple Wave on Sunday, 6 September. This is a completely free event, organised by UoM Sport.

This remote, mass participation challenge involves everyone taking part - running, walking or jogging - wherever they are, to collectively complete a virtual lap around the world!

You can choose to take on a distance of 2.5k, 5k, 10k, half marathon or one of your choice – and we’d love you to take part whether you were due to join in with our on-site Purple Wave events this year or not. We’re delighted that we’re still able to bring our University together through physical activity to be active, be well, be part of our community and raise money for a fantastic cause.

We’re so excited to see you take part in a way that suits you. Some of our shorter distances might even allow you to take part as a family!

Everyone involved will be asked to wear as much purple as possible on the big day – creating a huge splash of Manchester purple all across the world. And it’ll be visible to everyone from the comfort of their own homes, via the magic of social media.

And, if you like, you can use it as an opportunity to raise money for our chosen cause, Re-write Cancer. This University project aims to build a world-leading cancer research centre, right here in Manchester.

Re-write Cancer is more important now than ever. As a result of the coronavirus, both cancer research and cancer services have been significantly disrupted. But cancer won’t stop for the virus, and so we won’t either.

If you can, please join the community of University of Manchester students, staff, alumni and friends who are already fundraising for this incredible cause. Every pound you raise will be an important step towards creating a facility that could change – and even save – people’s lives.

There is no minimum fundraising target so you can set your own – every single pound raised will make a difference. To fundraise for Re-write Cancer through the Virtual Purple Wave, just visit our Re-write Cancer campaign page and click Start Fundraising. The Re-write Cancer team will then get in touch with you to support you with your fundraising.

Once you’re signed up, we’ll be in regular contact to support you with your challenge prep. Rest assured that whatever your goal might be, we’ll support you to achieve it. Our newsletters will also include more practical information closer to the big day, including how to log your distance with us online.

Whatever drives you, sign up now to join us in the first ever Virtual Purple Wave on Sunday, 6 September.
