Purple Wave 2019

Last year around 2,300 University of Manchester staff, students and alumni entered our Purple Wave. Help us to get over 3,000 in 2019!

The Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run

The Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run is the largest 10K in the UK consisting of around 25,000 participants each year. For the past 3 years, the University has hosted its very own purple wave. In 2019 we hope to create the biggest mass entry yet, so come and run, walk or jog with us and be part of the 3,000 strong #purplewave

Fundraising for The University of Manchester scholarships and research *THIS OPTION IS NOW CLOSED*

On Sunday, 19 May we would like to see as many students, staff and alumni as possible joining us to raise money for the University’s charitable causes. So, we are offering free Purple Wave registration for people who would like to fundraise for scholarships or medical research at the University, by running the 10K or half marathon.

Discounted places are also available for Purple Wave participants in the 10K and half marathon, as follows:

  • 10K Student - £20 (Non-discounted price £38)
  • 10K Staff - £30 (Non-discounted price £38)
  • 10K Alumni - £35 (Non-discounted price £38)
  • Half Marathon (21K) - £40.50 (Non-discounted price £45)

Our cost includes a free purple running t-shirt (value of £19.99) to be worn on event day. Discounted places are limited, so once these are sold out we will revert to the standard entry price – be sure to get your discounted entry early to avoid disappointment.

Registration has now closed.

New in 2019: Help us run to Singapore!

In 2019, through the purple wave, we are linking with overseas Universities and highlighting the remarkable work that UoM undertakes abroad. Every person that signs up to participate in the 2K, 5K, 10K or Half Marathon, their distance will contribute to our 30,000km route across the world to our partner University in Singapore. Our online tracker will be constantly updated, running through a number of countries on our journey to Singapore, where you will be able to access information about our overseas work when the distance increases.

UPDATE: With your help from sign-ups and training distances, we have now run 30,000km across the world to our final destination in Singapore! Singapore is the furthest place from the United Kingdom that can be reached by rail and road. See the right hand column to see how UoM links with the countries we have visited on our journey, and how UoM has made a dramatic contribution to social responsibility. Now let's see how far we can get... Can we travel the whole distance of the world?

Logging your training on Strava

You will be able to track your training for any of the purple wave events. We invite you to join one of our two Strava groups to keep a record of your running activity. As other products offer, you can use Strava for monitoring your training and sharing routes with other runners in the group. The purple wave team will use total distance run from the two groups each week to add to the total kilometres in the race to Singapore. Sign up to Strava here (https://www.strava.com/) and look for our two groups found under clubs:

  1. For established runners – University of Manchester Purple Wave 2019
  2. For beginners – University of Manchester Beginners Purple Wave 2019

The Great Manchester Run is for everyone, whether you are a complete beginner or the next Mo Farah, we have a number of running groups to support all levels of ability throughout your 10K or half marathon journey.

To support the scale of this project we require a number of people to help us both before the event and on the day itself. Previous years we have had a number of different roles in communications, marketing, run leaders and event day logistics that require support, so if you want to get involved check out our Sports Volunteering Scheme, which has loads of other fantastic benefits.

UoM Wall of Sound

If you are not running but want to support, you can still be involved by coming down on the day and cheering our runners, walkers and joggers at our UoM Wall of Sound. Located on Bridgewater Way at the junction with Chester Road, our purple cheer-point is free and suitable for all ages. It is open from 8.30am-4.30pm and easily accessed from Cornbrook tram stop or you can walk 35 minutes from Renold Building heading for M16 9FG.

We have a great grassy picnic spot, our Fuse FM DJ's and a range of other exciting things planned, so come wearing purple and cheer on our participants!
