The Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run is the largest 10K in the UK consisting of around 25,000 participants each year. For the past 3 years, the University has hosted its very own purple wave. In 2019 we hope to create the biggest mass entry yet, so come and run, walk or jog with us and be part of the 3,000 strong #purplewave
The event is taking place on Sunday, 19th May and would like to offer as many students, staff and alumni as possible the opportunity to join us and support the city on this important day. We have discounted places for all our participants in the 10K and the half marathon. To encourage people to raise money for the University's charitable causes, we are also offering free Purple Wave registration for people who would like to fundraise for scholarships or research at The University of Manchester by running the 10K or Half Marathon for sponsorship.
Discounted prices:
Our cost includes a free purple running t-shirt (value of £19.99) to be worn on event day. Discounted places are limited, so once these are sold out we will revert to the standard entry price – be sure to get your discounted entry early to avoid disappointment.
Registration IS NOW OPEN!
If you need more information about any aspect of the event please email us at purplewave@manchester.ac.uk.
In 2019, through the purple wave, we are linking with overseas Universities and highlighting the remarkable work that UoM undertakes abroad. Every person that signs up to participate in the 2K, 5K, 10K or Half Marathon, their distance will contribute to our 30,000km route across the world to our partner University in Singapore. Our online tracker will be constantly updated, running through a number of countries on our journey to Singapore, where you will be able to access information about our overseas work when the distance increases.
See our distance ticker in the right hand column! Keep an eye out for our visual maps and overseas content coming soon!
You will be able to track your training for any of the purple wave events. We invite you to join one of our two Strava groups to keep a record of your running activity. As other products offer, you can use Strava for monitoring your training and sharing routes with other runners in the group. The purple wave team will use total distance run from the two groups each week to add to the total kilometres in the race to Singapore. Sign up to Strava here (https://www.strava.com/) and look for our two groups found under clubs:

The Great Manchester Run is for everyone, whether you are a complete beginner or the next Mo Farah, we have a number of running groups to support all levels of ability throughout your 10K or half marathon journey.
To support the scale of this project we require a number of people to help us both before the event and on the day itself. Previous years we have had a number of different roles in communications, marketing, run leaders and event day logistics that require support, so if you want to get involved check out our Sports Volunteering Scheme, which has loads of other fantastic benefits.
If you are not running but want to support, we have our very own University of Manchester cheer point out on the course to help get our purple runners to the finish line. The cheer point is located on Chester Road, where runners will pass their supporters twice. We will be making this area bigger and better than ever this year and more on this will appear here soon.
See our online tracker's progress on our journey to Singapore! We will be hitting places such as Amsterdam, Uganda, Tanzania and Beijing. We are now 9402.9km through our journey!
